ANSWERS YOU NEED

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Psychologists have completed extensive formal training, with a minimum requirement of six years. They use evidence-based treatment for their clients and use psychometric assessment to measure improved outcomes for their clients. Psychologists are required to be registered under AHPRA and meet professional development requirements each year. Counsellors and psychotherapists may have trained for 1 to 3 years.

  • Client’s needs are difficult to estimate. Some clients may have one or a couple of sessions to obtain support during a time of crisis. Others might remain in therapy for an extended period, depending on the individual needs of the client. Most clients will have somewhere between six to twenty sessions, depending on severity of symptoms and treatment needs.

  • There is sometimes the misconception that therapy is only available to people who have significant emotional difficulties. This is not correct. Therapy is also available to people who are currently struggling with an aspect of their lives and a psychologist will assist you to explore and resolve those difficulties.

  • A MHCP is not a requirement to be able to see a psychologist. However, if you would like to claim a Medicare rebate for your session, you will need to see your GP to see whether you are eligible for a MHCP. Some clients may have private sessions, and if they have private health, they might be able to claim their sessions under their private health.

  • The decision to see a psychologist can be daunting, but we will endeavour to make your experience as comfortable as possible. You do not need to prepare for your session, your psychologist will assist you through the process. Initially, an intake process will occur which will include why you have come to therapy, your childhood experiences, and history. Your psychologist will assist you to set some goals to achieve your desired outcome. A treatment plan will then be developed, discussed, and agreed upon. From this point, your intervention to reach your desired outcome will commence.
