TECHNIQUES WE USE

Therapy Treatment Styles

At Connections Psychology Practice, we use a diverse range of evidence-based therapy modalities in treatment provided to adult clients.

  • EMDR is an evidence-based therapy for processing traumatic memories. The mind can often heal itself naturally, in the same way that the body does. Much of the natural healing occurs whilst we sleep, particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Francine Shapiro developed EMDR Therapy in 1987, utilising the natural healing process in order to successfully treat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Since then, EMDR has been used to effectively assist in the treatment of a wide range of mental health problems. These include anxiety and panic attacks, depression, stress, phobias, sleep problems, complicated grief, addictions, pain relief, phantom limb pain, self-esteem and performance anxiety. Sharon is trained to the advanced level in EMDR Therapy.

  • The goal of ACT is to increase psychological flexibility and have the ability to enter the present moment more fully. This allows the client to move towards more valued behaviour.

  • This is a talking therapy used to treat people with a large range of mental health problems and explores how thoughts impact on emotions and behaviour.

  • MI is an approach that is a directive and a client-centred counselling style that assists to elicit behaviour change by assisting clients to explore and resolve ambivalence regarding change. The process assists clients to consider change. The resolution of ambivalence is the primary goal for facilitation of a client’s interpersonal relationship.

  • The focus of this therapy is on being in the present moment, to teach people to be more conscious of their thoughts, emotions, and body sensations, without placing judgement on them.

  • Clinical hypnosis is a natural state of selective and focused attention. During sessions, we enter a state of deep relaxation which allows us to access thoughts and emotions connected to behaviours that are normally inaccessible to use. Working with the unconscious mind allows us to change thoughts, feelings, and behaviours without conscious effort. Hypnotherapy is an evidence-based treatment that can be very helpful in treating negative behaviours and habits including but not limited to smoking, alcohol, weight, and gambling. Clinical hypnosis can also be helpful for depression, anxiety, phobias, and sleep, self-esteem, and self-confidence difficulties.

  • This is an integrative therapy that includes elements of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Attachment and Objects Relation Therapy, and Experiential Therapies to encourage clients with understanding and empathy to identify a need for change and give them the tools to make that change.
